ECM-98T & ECM-9800 Electronic Coin Mechanism

Requires NO WAND!!!

When USA TODAY asked us, in 1991, to develop an Electronic Coin Mechanism for their own News Rack, we asked them to tell us their concept of the “IDEAL ELECTRONIC COIN MECHANISM”. After many sessions and additional inputs from a GANNETT Coin Mechanism Task Force, the first thing they decided was that this new coin mechanism MUST NOT NEED A WAND to increase/decrease vend prices or to perform any other function that may be required over the life of the coin mechanism.

Their main objections to a WAND were as follows:
  1. WANDS are a COSTLY add on.

  2. WANDS add to the complexity of the overall system, both in knowledge required to use the WAND as well as the knowledge required to repair it.

  3. Having to provide EVERY DISTRIBUTOR with a wand, and the training to use it, were major obstacles to being able to provide them with the necessary pricing flexibility required in a competitive market place.

  4. WAND replacement/repair on an ongoing basis is just another step that offered no visible benefit, but instead added to the complexity and cost of the overall distribution organization.
BECAUSE OF THE ABOVE the ECM-9800 and ECM-98T were designed to enable a Newspaper to make all Price Changes, Service Token Re-calibrations and Promo Token re-calibrations at the Rack Location in less than a minute. The user needs only some simple instructions and a small magnet to perform all of the above functions. For full details, look at the section on OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS.
